I am a god who never wanted to be holy, by Lucy Jones

I'm not very good at examining poetry yet, but I really liked the descriptions. "...reach inside my sternum and pull out in a clawed fist whatever makes me write poetry, paint the mountains, and love somebody." -- That line in particular, the visuals and the rhythm, got into my spine.

In my 'intro to creative writing' class, we have just begun the unit on poetry. In addition to our assigned readings, our teacher wanted us to find a poem on our own to share with the class. This magazine had a number of good ones, but this is the one I picked to share.

This is a poem I feel like I understand, at least a little, but I can't figure out how to put my thoughts of it into words. I can only really picture the meaning and vibe in images. I'd have to paint it, but I don't see it in a style I can paint in.

It's hard to pick a favourite part. "...that steals your smile at the supermarket and hides it in the tomato aisle," is really fun. "...I get hungry for pickled okra and we share the whole jar," has an energy I resonate with somehow.

I like this poem a lot.

Lower, by Lichen

I really like the visual textures here. The monochrome is harsh, and the jagged lines and thickness of the marker scratch my brain in a particular way. It feels like something I'd find at a zine library or fair, where I'd talk to people that have the same creative flame of resistance in their hearts that I feel in mine.
